Children
I particularly enjoy working with children because they come with a clean slate. The fear and dread that was associated with visiting the dentist in previous generations is now replaced with excitement and security. Please read below for some answers to questions you may have about your children’s dental needs.
Q: When should be my child’s first visit to the dentist?
According to the ADA (American Dental Association) a child’s first visit should be as soon as your child’s first tooth has erupted (which can be as early as 6 months).
Q: What happens during this first visit?
The first routine visits are short and fun. I will check your child’s mouth, count her teeth and clean them with a soft rotary brush. I use child friendly language substituting “Mr. thirsty” for the suction cup and “jelly” for the fluoride. If your child knows how to rinse and spit, a fluoride gel will be applied to the teeth. Your child cannot eat or drink for half and hour after the appointment.
Q: How can I best prepare my toddler or preschooler for the dentist?
Try to book early appointments and have him come in on a full stomach.
Role play a visit to the dentist with your child
Watch what you say. Children have an amazing ability to pick up on our fears. Avoid phrases such as ” if you behave at the dentist , you will get a treat”. Rather say” Oh, what fun we will have at the dentist” Also avoid using negative words such as “drill”, “needle”, “hurt”.
Read appropriate children’s books about visiting the dentist.
Q: How do I clean my baby’s teeth?
Once your first baby’s teeth have erupted you can clean them after every meal using a soft bristled tooth brush or a wet cloth. With toddlers use a children’s toothbrush with a non fluoride toothpaste. Do not use any fluoride toothpaste until your child is able to spit and rinse properly.
Q: What is baby bottle decay and how do I prevent it?
Do not let your baby fall asleep with a bottle filled with water or juice. Avoid letting your child use a bottle or a sippy cup for extended time during the day.
